Different Best Types of Sewer Pipe Line Materials for Seattle Washington

There are an overwhelming amount of sewer lines, of all things. Clothes, bell peppers, and types of bread, sure. But sewer lines? That’s why Complete Trenchless is here to help you choose. We are here to help you figure out which type of sewer line is best for you.

The most frequently seen types of pipes are:

  • Cast iron
  • Asbestos and cement
  • PVC
  • Galvanized steel
  • Concrete
  • HDPE

Each different pipe comes with its advantages and disadvantages.

Cast iron: Cast iron pipes are most typically used because they’re very, very strong. They can withstand the weight of stones and dirt without breaking, which makes them great for commercial, industrial, residential, or municipal properties. They rust and corrode quickly, however, and that can cause the pipe to wearout and decrease in diameter over the years. That causes the pipes to clog. These pipes are most recommended for indoor use, not recommended for outdoor use.

Asbestos and cement: This type of pipe is used mainly for its ability to withstand high pressures, which makes it a great fit for water mains. These pipes are easily intruded by outside forces like tree root invasions, shrub root invasions, or other plant root invasions, which can make having trees or other shrubbery around your septic tank or sewer line very challenging.

PVC pipes: There are several different types of plastic/PVC pipes. The unplasticized PVC pipes are used in cold water systems; those that are plasticized are used in lower temperatures and low strength applications, whereas chlorinated PVC pipes are designed to withstand high temperatures and high strength applications.

Galvanized steel: If you coat your steel pipes in zinc, you get pipes that are well protected from corrosion. They come in a variety of thicknesses and grades. The light and medium level grades of galvanized pipes are used in indoor/internal plumbing, though these pipes are more expensive than PVC.

Concrete pipes: They are primarily used for supplying water. They may or may not be reinforced with varying diameters. The smaller, unreinforced concrete pipes are used primarily to drain rain water, whereas the larger, reinforced concrete pipes are used for major water supply projects, even water mains.

HDPE Pipes: These are most likely the most effective pipes in the market. They come in varying thicknesses and can be used in highly demanding pressure, and temperature, environments. Some of them come with a 50 year guarantee and can bend at a 90 degree angle, due to their high-quality material. Because of the material, roots never grow into them and that’s why they’re most recommended for being used as a main sewer line and water lines, in some applications.
